Sabdamala- Nepali Language School in Sydney - Australia

Guthi Australia (GA) and the Gurkha Nepalese Community (GNC) have taken an initiative to have a fully operational Nepalese Language School (NLS) where Nepalese language skills will be developed. The NLS follows up on the developments made by the GNC through its Nepalese Children’s Activity Group (NCAG). The Nepalese Children Activity Group (NCAG) was a program initiated by the Gurkha-Nepalese Community in Sydney for all children of Nepalese origin in 2004. The group's main objective was to facilitate the learning and practice of Nepalese language and culture.
The NLS is at present being managed by a Steering Committee (SC) comprising of representatives from GA and the GNC. The ownership of the NLS rests with the GA and GNC for all working purposes.
The GA and GNC feel that it would be productive to have a centralised approach for a NLS in Sydney. This would mean:

  • One approach based on quality that is consistently applied across all branches.
  • Better chances of securing funding, qualified staff and other resources.
  • Quality curriculum that is applied consistently.
  • The School being managed by a SC consisting of community association representatives, academic staff and parents, with branch leaders. The steering committee is essentially a working committee consisting of individuals that are actively involved in the conceptualisation and design of the program.
